DEPICTING THE INVISIBLE
A Portrait Series of Veterans Suffering From PTSD

post - trau · mat · ic  stress dis · or · der noun.
A condition of persistent mental and emotional stress occurring as a result of injury or severe psychological

shock.

Susan J. Barron’s breathtaking mixed media depictions are achieved through photographic imagery, paint and text. Incorporated into these portraits are veteran’s stories in their own words. Many of their stories, by turns horrifying and  hopeful, are bravely told here for the first time.

''This body of work was inspired when I learned that 22 veterans commit suicide every day in the US. As an artist I wanted to shine a light on this epidemic of PTSD and suicide. I want to give these veterans a voice.''
- Susan J. Barron

Ms. Barron's mission is to create a dialogue and community around the difficult issue of PTSD. The mission is to depict the invisible scars of war. The mission is to show these brave individuals that they are not alone, to end their isolation.

Depicting the Invisible made its world premier at the HG Contemporary gallery in New York City on Veteran's Day, 2018. These veterans were in attendance with their families, and were given a forum to speak.

"If we don't talk about PTSD, we can't save lives." -
Specialist Ken Weinert, Recipient of the Purple Heart

A multi-award-winning documentary short about Susan J. Barron and her Depicting The Invisible series was released.

In 2018, DTI was featured at Art AQUA Miami during Miami Basel.

In 2019, the work was on exhibit at the Reece Museum in Johnson City, TN and received a six month exhibition at the Army & Navy Club in Washington, DC.

2020 will bring Depicting the Invisible to the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, TN.

A limited edition art book of the portrait series has been published. All proceeds were donated to support veterans’ causes, including Freedom Fighters Outdoors.
